SCOTTISH GOLFERS ~ Revisited

Posted by: woodbeecarver   in Carving Projects

The first Scottish Golfers were carved in 2008 and has now been revisited with a 2020 carved version of these two Scotsmen.  This posting will be devoted to a visual tour beginning with the beginning progressive stages of each one in front of photos from the 2008 carving exercise.  Most of the photos will be of each Scotsman in there finished poses.

Knives were used to carve each one and a wood burner was used to burn in the lines to simulate the plaid effect.  Acrylic paint was used to paint the white of the shirts and socks with artist oil paint thinned with boiled linseed oil colored the rest of the carving.  Each was carved out of a basswood block six inches tall by an inch and three quarters square.

The WOOD BEE CARVER advocates that wood carving is a learn by doing experience with the more one carves the better one carves.  Each carving project is a learning exercise and prepares the carver for the next carving project.  Each carving repeated is an interpretation of the subject rather than a copy because what is learned in the previous carving project will guide in carving the next project. So, as in carving these two Scottish Golfers again from the previous project in 2008 and carving them together in 2020, what was learned in the first guided in carving the second. The second one was an interpretation of the first as the 2020 versions are an interpretation of the 2008 versions.  The journey continues with the lessons each new carving project provides, ”Keep carving and carving will keep you carving,” is the carver’s mantra.
