WAG SCHOOL OF WOODCARVING

The WAG School of Woodcarving holds 3 day carving events that join student with some of the finest carving instructors in the Southeast. Included in the cost of tuition is full room and board. There is no need to try and find a hotel or good place to eat. We take care of all that for you. All you have to worry about is becoming the best carver you can be.

DON MERTZ Donald K. Mertz, the WOOD BEE CARVER has been carving seriously since 1975 using a style he calls “Whittle Folk Art” that is primarily knife carving on a square block of basswood. He has written articles in Chip Chats, Woodcarving Illustrated and has taught for nine years at War Eagle Seminars and for various woodcarving clubs in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Indiana.

He authors an instructional web log at www.woodbeecarver.com as well as showing his carvings in six woodcarving shows a year and judging at some. Don became a member of the Caricature Carvers of America in 2009.

A-B-B’s of FACE CARVINGTHE A-B-C’s OF FACE CARVING:

Learning to carve a caricature/realistic face from a square block of basswood using only a knife. Students will learn the basic proportions of the face and body of a full figure using the RULE OF THREE guideline.

Students will learn how to open up a block of wood using various “slicing” cuts and learn how to carve an animated carving that has movement while telling its own story.

WHITTLE FOLK MONKSWHITTLE FOLK MONKS

The initial subject will be a Whittle Folk Monk carved out of a three inch by one inch square block of basswood concentrating on facial features since the monk is wearing a full length robe.

CARVING GLOVE REQUIRED.

Wood for the carving project will be provided as part of the class fee.
