This commission carving of Uncle Sam was carved in a basswood block seven inches tall by two inches square in the Whittle-Carving Style of carving using only knives to shape the figure. Uncle Sam with Scroll and Cane is an interpretative pose of this iconic figure.
Presented here will be a photographic gallery of the completed Uncle Sam and then followed with progressive stages from the beginning Shape Up the basic form procedures through the developing stages of finishing details. This gallery encourages a study of each progressive photo to imagine how the entire carving came together for its final presentation. A more detailed tutorial can be visited by clicking on SHAPE UP link of previous Uncle Sam carving project.
