Cameron Proctor, better know as “HOBO” carved this likeness of the WOOD BEE CARVER and made me look better than I really am. That is what carving friends do, make us look better because of the common kinship we have through wood carving. I have never met Hobo face to face and yet he is like a long lost relative as we share a common bond of interests. We met through the Message Board on Woodcarving Illustrated web site and have talked on the telephone. Hobo lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina and carves in the tradition of such carvers as Tom Wolfe, David Boone, Mitch Cartledge and the Wade Brothers http://toto.lib.unca.edu/findingaids/realia/martin/default_martin.htm. Recently he surprised me with a gift of several carvings and carving tools and like I said we are “two of a kind” when it comes to our interests.
HOBO has been carving for a good many years first for the furniture industry and progressing into the fun type of carving caricatures. He has been doing a lot of carving recently and getting pretty good at it as is evidenced by these recent creations from his sharp tools and even sharper mind. One can tell by looking at the gentle facial expressions and pristine detail of HOBO’s style of carving that he is an even nicer person in real life. As an illustration of the generosity of his spirit the next series of photographs are of those carvings HOBO gave me as a gift of friendship.
