In the two previous posts Rube and Cedrick were introduced.  They stand five inches tall and are now joined by Half Pint who stands two inches including the base he is standing on.  Half Pint is the same design and pose of Rube and Cedrick and the RULE OF THREE was used on Half Pint to maintain body and facial proportions.

In carving a human figure out of a block of wood, the first procedure is to carve the head  covering and head to its basic form.  Once this has been accomplished the remaining wood is divided using the RULE OF THREE for body proportions.  Half Pint is a model for a two inch tall miniature figure to illustrate how the RULE OF THREE works for even a miniature carving.  The two previous posts for Rube and Cedrick adequately describe the RULE OF THREE so the reader is encouraged to read those posts also.

Half Pint has been carved to his basic form with his pose and proportions established.  The RULE OF THREE has been utilized for both the face and and body to keep his proportions in proper perspective.

These four views show Half Pint carved in detail and awaiting the painting procedure to fully dress him with dignity and poise.

Half Pint has now been painted making it easier to see the details of the carving.  Notice the lazy S flowing lines of his pose, his vest and coat tail.  Notice his torn trouser knee and patch and torn elbow in jacket along with shoulder seams coming apart.  He may be worn  and frayed a little around the edges but within he is a refined gentleman of the road who stands with an inner dignity of being his own man, free as the breeze yet steady as the wind.

The first two photographs are close up views to show the profile and back of Half Pint’s head as well as cap and clothing details.  The third photographs shows the two knives used in carving this  two inch tall miniature in a style called Whittle-Carving.  Both blades have the cutting edge curving up to meet the back of the blade.  Most of the carving was  carved using the very tip of the blade using slicing cuts.

Rube, Half Pint and Cedrick are in the first photo to the left while the second photograph is of Half Pint standing beside Max who is seven eights of an inch tall.  Each of these hobos were carved using the RULE OF THREE proportional guideline so that no matter their size each looks to be in proportion.
