The Soft Painting Trail Begins

   Posted by: woodbeecarver   in

The carving of a Santa carving a Santa is ready to be painted using Artist Oil Paints and Boiled Linseed Oil. Boiled Linseed Oil contains a chemical that allows it to harden and dry within a few days and ready to receive the protective finish of Deft, a brushing lacquer rather than the spray can variety. Brushing on Deft with an artist brush gets a more even finish over all the carving. The verbal explanations that go along with these photos offers one way to color or paint carvings as one of many. There is no right or perfect method for painting so it is highly recommended that experimentation be the order of the day. Just like the carving process, the sharpening process, or tools used, there is no right or perfect solution, only an opinion. So the WOOD BEE CARVER follows the one rule, “If it works for you, then that’s the one to use.” The purpose of this “PAINTING SOFTLY – photo trail” is to present what works for me but it is not necessarily any better than another method. I have often said about wood carving, “There are no mistakes, only learning experiences.” We never learn unless we try so do not be afraid to try this method as another way to finish one’s carvings.
