Gnome Wizard is a subject that is often used as an instructional project with the first instructional description was done in a blog posting three years ago that can be visited again by clicking on the hot link entitled GNOME WIZARD.

The five Gnome Wizards depicted in this photo essay were recently carved as a way of illustrating how the same subject can be carved to have a personality of its own even while each one is similar to the others.  While each one was carved possessing the basic Whittle-Carving cuts and facets yet when the finish is applied there is a different visual approach between to monochrome finish of one color and the poly-chrome finish of multiple colors.  The visual approach of the multi-colored Gnome Wizard sees the colors as being predominate.  The visual approach of the one color of raw sienna sees the texture of the surface of the carving.  The cuts and facets of the one color causes the surface texture to be amplified or to emphasize that texture is color in its own right.

In this Redux of visiting again the familiar subject of a Gnome Wizard visually study the three views of the five Gnome Wizards in the photo essay below.

Every carving project becomes a friend as the carver carves personality and life into a block of wood to create a character. Carving is a conversation carried on between imagination and the act of shaping a piece of wood resulting is a story told and retold in the carved piece of wood. The WOOD BEE CARVER has long propagated the experienced observation that comes by carving a subject over and over again. Each carving project is a learning experience, a practice piece and a time to engage imagination once again in the process of creating a fresh and new carved personality. Even when one carves the same subject over and over again, each new adventure in carving that similar carving becomes a new character of the imagination coming to life in wood. Lessons learned from previous carving of a given subject will guide in the carving of a new edition with subtle and yet significant innovations and embellishments.

Visit each photograph again to listen through visual communication to the conversation each of these characters is saying. If you do not hear anything, turn on your imagination to listen to the slice of the knife singing through the wood as the wood chips fly away in freedom to allow the character to come to life. Listen to each color and texture for the one that tells the best story.  Be encouraged to carve you own imagination over and over again while listening to the story each carving will tell.
